CIHR Doctoral Research Awards: Change to competition deadline and number of targeted awards

(2013-07-09) The CIHR Doctoral Research Awards (DRA) competition deadline will be changing effective for the Fall 2013 competition. This change will allow CIHR to improve operational efficiencies. The new application deadline will be October 1st (rather than October 15).

Starting this year, CIHR is rebalancing its distribution between Doctoral Research Awards and Master’s Awards within the Canada Graduate Scholarship program. Under this program CIHR is expected to fund 400 Doctoral Awards (approximately 133 new 3-year awards per year) and 400 Master’s Awards (400 new 1-year awards per year). Over the past few years CIHR had overinvested in Doctoral Awards, meaning that fewer Master’s Awards could be afforded (for example in 2012/13 CIHR Awarded 183 Doctoral Awards and 140 Master’s Awards).

Starting this year, CIHR will begin to shift available investment to meet the target of 400 Doctoral Awards and 400 Masters Award’s on an ongoing-basis. It is important to note that CIHR’s overall level of investment in graduate-level training through the Canada Graduate Scholarship Program will continue at the same funding level and will continue to be augmented by the Doctoral Foreign Study Award and awards offered through priority announcements.
