Minister Aglukkaq announces new appointment to the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Ottawa (June 11, 2013) – The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, today announced the appointment of Dr. Terrance P. Snutch to the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for a three-year term.

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Snutch to CIHR’s Governing Council where he joins an already outstanding group of Canadians,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “As a distinguished scientist and successful entrepreneur, Dr. Snutch will bring significant expertise and an important perspective to the work of CIHR’s Governing Council.”

Dr. Snutch is internationally renowned for his contributions in the field of neuroscience. He is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Michael Smith Laboratories, Departments of Psychiatry and Zoology, and the Brain Research Centre at the University of British Columbia. His many scientific contributions include the development of novel methodology to clone genes from the brain resulting in the isolation of the first serotonin neurotransmitter receptor and major ion channels involved in conducting brain electrical signals.

Dr. Snutch’s research has been widely recognized. His many awards include Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Research Scholar, the Medical Research Council of Canada Scientist, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Senior Scientist.

Dr. Snutch is inducted as a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
