Application Summary deadline: May 6, 2013Support under this RFA is targeted at high-quality biomedical, clinical and translational research providing information which may form the basis of innovative cancer prevention, diagnosis and/or treatment.

1.2 NYAS-CIHR Institute of Cancer Research Early Career Investigator Travel Fellowships
Application deadline postponed to May 8, 2013The location of the upcoming conference Nanotechnologies in Cancer Diagnosis, Therapy and Prevention on June 11–13, 2013 has been changed to the Rockefeller Research Laboratories at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York City. ICR partners with the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) to support the NYAS-CIHR Institute of Cancer Research Early Career Investigator Travel Fellowship for this conference.

1.3 CIHR Café Scientifique Program (2013)
Application deadline: May 24, 2013This program aims at providing support for the organization of informal events between the general public and health research experts regarding a particular health-related issue of popular interest. CIHR's Café Scientifiques cover a wide range of topics, from nutrition to mental health at the workplace to air pollution. These events take place at a café, a pub or a restaurant and do not require that the participants have a science degree. ICR is providing $15,000 for this program.

1.4 CIHR Travel Awards - Institute Community Support (Spring 2013 Competition)
Application Deadline: May 27, 2013ICR will provide funding for applications to travel to all annual, or other regular interval, meetings including international conferences that are determined to be relevant to its mandate. The amount for a single grant is up to $1,000. ICR's budget for this competition is $15,000.

1.5 Dissemination Events: Spring 2013 Priority Announcement (Cancer Research)
Application deadline: June 17, 2013ICR will provide funding for applications that address the following research priority areas: (1) lifestyle, environment, and cancer prevention (2) diagnosis and guided therapy: towards personalized medicine (3) cancer initiation and intervention, and (4) cancer survivorship. The total amount available for this competition is one single grant of $25,000 maximum.

1.6 The Terry Fox New Frontiers Program Project Grant competition (2014)
Application deadline for LOI: July 2, 2013Support under this RFA is for multidisciplinary programs of excellence that contribute to well-defined research topics of relevance to cancer. The goal is to provide new knowledge with the potential to transform cancer diagnosis, treatment and/or understanding of cancer biology.

1.7 Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) Program
Application deadline for LOI: August 1, 2013This program invests in Canadian research and entrepreneurial talent to translate and apply knowledge, generating economic and social benefits for Canadians. Networks play an important role in mobilizing some of the best academic research talent found in Canada, and in engaging Canadian and international partners in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. Together, they expand the global knowledge frontier to develop and implement multifaceted solutions to complex Canadian issues, which increases the impact of research and research training on Canada.
2. Funding Decisions
2.1 Government of Canada Announces New Personalized Health Research Projects Across Canada
The federal government announced 17 genomics and personalized medicine health research projects that aim to truly transform and improve the ability to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases. These projects were funded under the Personalized Medicine Initiative, through a partnership between CIHR, Genome Canada, and the Cancer Stem Cell Consortium. Through this video clip, Génome Québec commends the excellence of Québec researchers and congratulates them for their exceptional performance in this initiative.
2.2 Harper Government supports Canadian National Transplant Research Program
The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health announced the launch of a new national transplantation research program that will develop new knowledge and health care practices that address barriers to tissue and organ donation and will improve health outcomes for transplant recipients in Canada. The CNTRP brings together over 105 investigators across 9 provinces and is the first program in the world to unite and integrate the solid organ transplant, bone marrow transplant and the donation and critical care research communities together in a ground-breaking national research endeavour. Funding for this program, in the order of $13.85M, is being provided through CIHR in partnership with Canadian Blood Services, Canadian Liver Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Fonds de recherche du Québec-Santé, Genome BC, and the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

- The 2nd Canadian Cancer Research Conference is taking place on November 3-6, 2013 at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto. During this meeting, ICR and the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute will be hosting another New PI Meeting as part of the Careers in Cancer Research Development Program, which will also include career development lunch lectures and mentorship opportunities.
