1. Funding Opportunities

  • 1.1 ICR Knowledge Translation and Exchange Research Training Award (2012/2013)
    Application deadline: March 31, 2013

    The aim of ICR's KTE Research Training Award Program is to build research capacity by providing researchers with funding for KTE research training. The training may be acquired outside the applicant's home institution through participation in specialized KTE courses or through training with an expert researcher, knowledge user, or research team. Experts may be from within or outside the applicant's discipline. Investigators conducting research that is relevant to ICR's mission are eligible to apply for this award, worth up to $5,000.

  • 1.2 Catalyst Grant: Environments, Genes and Chronic Disease
    Application deadline: April 2, 2013

    The aim of this funding opportunity is to support new research relating to environment, genes and chronic disease, including novel research approaches and methodologies to address this research area. To encourage inter-disciplinary approaches to this research, applicants must collaborate with a colleague with expertise in a different discipline or field of research from their own.

  • 1.3 NYAS-CIHR Institute of Cancer Research Early Career Investigator Travel Fellowships
    Application deadline: April 24, 2013

    ICR partners with the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) to support the NYAS-CIHR Institute of Cancer Research Early Career Investigator Travel Fellowship for the upcoming conference Nanotechnologies in Cancer Diagnosis, Therapy and Prevention on June 11–13, 2013 in Moscow, Russia.

  • 1.4 Advancing Big Data Science in Genomics Research: Call for Proposals
    LOI Application deadline: May 1, 2013

    CIHR, NSERC, Genome Canada, and CFI plan to award one Discovery Frontier grant through this call. It is anticipated that the new knowledge, tools and infrastructure produced from this research will facilitate breakthrough discoveries and innovation in genomics, engineering, medicine, and other disciplines, pushing Canada to the forefront of big data science in genomics research. Potential applicants may contact the regional Genome Centres to discuss opportunities for guidance in developing their applications to this program.

  • 1.5 Dissemination Events: Spring 2013 Priority Announcement (Cancer Research)
    Application Deadline: June 17, 2013

    ICR will provide funding for applications that address the following research priority areas: (1) lifestyle, environment, and cancer prevention (2) diagnosis and guided therapy: towards personalized medicine (3) cancer initiation and intervention, and (4) cancer survivorship. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is one single grant of $25,000 maximum.

  • 1.6 PHAC Multi-sectoral Partnerships to Promote Healthy Living and Prevent Chronic Disease - Invitation to Submit a Letter of Intent (no deadline)

    The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has released an Invitation to Submit a Letter of Intent for projects in the areas of healthy living, chronic disease prevention, and tobacco. The intention of this invitation is to provide an on-going opportunity for stakeholders to submit project ideas that support Multi-sectoral Partnerships to Promote Healthy Living and Prevent Chronic Disease. Please note that there is no deadline to submit your Letter of Intent. For details on this invitation, please visit PHAC’s website or send your questions by email. 2. Institute Advisory Board Renewal

CIHR is renewing the membership of its thirteen Institute Advisory Boards (IABs). Online applications for the 11th annual cycle of IAB renewal can be submitted, via ResearchNet until April 15, 2013. IABs will be composed of 12 members in 2013. Detailed instructions on how to apply to become an IAB member are available on the CIHR website.

3. CIHR Website Research

CIHR is currently performing user research to gain insight into the usability of their website and they would appreciate your input. You can access the activity online. It should take you no more than 5 minutes to complete. This activity is completely anonymous and is an evaluation of their website - there are no right or wrong answers. 4. Meetings of Interest to the Community

  • 4.1 April 6-10, 2013, Washington DC: American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting 2013.

  • 4.2 Pediatric Oncology Research Day, April 15, 2013, Toronto. In celebration of the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario’s (POGO’s) 30th anniversary, the POGO Research Unit invites graduate students and early career professionals in the field of pediatric oncology to attend a research day. Learn to write strong grant applications, get tips to take your career to the next level, and discover how to capitalize on POGONIS – POGO’s unique and rich pediatric cancer research database.

  • 4.3 April 21-24, 2013, Esterel, Quebec: The CIHR Institute of Genetics, in collaboration with the Canadian Gene Cure Foundation, is pleased to sponsor the Second Annual Canadian Human and Statistical Genetics Meeting. The 2012 edition built upon the traditions of the past Canadian Genetic Epidemiology and Statistical meetings, and the Canadian Human Genetics Conferences.

  • 4.4 April 22-26, 2013, Lake Louise, AB: Genome Canada and the CIHR Institute of Genetics want to bring to your attention to Mutation Detection 2013 - The 12th International Symposium on Mutation in the Genome: Mutation Detection & Genome SequencingDetecting Variants one-by-one or Genome Wide. This is a unique opportunity to attend this biennial meeting being held in North America for the very first time.

  • 4.5 April 24-26, 2013, Ottawa: Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology (CAPO) 2013: Connecting with Intention in Psychosocial Oncology. The 2013 conference will bring together interdisciplinary professionals to explore, share, learn and discuss the psychosocial aspects of cancer. Early bird regisration March 16, 2013.

  • 4.6 June 4-6, 2013, Winnipeg: Canadian Student Health Research Forum. The event, now in its 25th year, and sponsored by CIHR, provides a venue for health research trainees from across Canada to present their work, network and be recognized for the excellence of their contributions. It also features research poster days, awards of excellence, tours and social events as well as a symposium on a cross-disciplinary scientific theme by some of the world's leading scientists in that field.

  • 4.7 June 9-12, 2013, Ottawa: Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) 2013 Annual Conference. CPHA is pleased to announce the call for abstracts, workshops, pre-conference and breakfast sessions for the CPHA 2013 Annual Conference.

  • 4.8 June 11–13, 2013, Moscow, Russia: Nanotechnologies in Cancer Diagnosis, Therapy, and Prevention.

  • 4.9 June 12-14, 2013, Montreal: Montreal International Symposium on Angiogenesis and Metastasis (MISAM) 2013: Primary and Metastatic Brain Cancer: Molecular Pathways and Clinical Challenges. Registration opens February 1st 2013 with an abstract submission deadline of April 30, 2013. Please visit MISAM website for more details on speakers, program, fees, and venue.

  • 4.10 November 3-6, 2013, Toronto: 2013 New PI Meeting. The 2nd Canadian Cancer Research Conference has been scheduled for November 3-6, 2013 at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto. During this meeting, ICR and the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute will be hosting another New PI Meeting as part of the Careers in Cancer Research Development Program, which will also include career development lunch lectures as well as a career developmental portal and discussion forum. This meeting is an excellent opportunity for networking and cross-fertilization for researchers at all stages in their careers.

  • 4.11 November 3-6, 2013, Lima, Peru: 5th International Cancer Control Congress. Abstract Submission deadline June 14, 2013.
