1. Description

A commitment to knowledge translation and exchange (KTE) is at the core of the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research's (CIHR-ICR) mission to support cancer research excellence and to apply these research findings to identify and address pressing health challenges. KTE is a dynamic and iterative process that includes the synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically-sound implementation of knowledge to improve the health of Canadians, provide more effective health services and products and strengthen the healthcare system. Building capacity for cancer researchers to undertake and demonstrate excellence in KTE is a focal point of ICR's KTE strategy.

The aim of ICR's KTE Research Training Award Program is to build research capacity by providing researchers with funding for KTE research training. The training may be acquired outside the applicant's home institution through participation in specialized KTE courses or through training with an expert researcher, knowledge user, or research team. Experts may be from within or outside the applicant's discipline.

Investigators conducting research that is relevant to ICR's mission are eligible to apply for this award, worth up to $5,000.

2. Available Funds

The maximum amount for a single award is $5,000. Up to two awards may be granted per year. ICR's contribution to the amount available for these awards is subject to availability of funds voted annually to CIHR by parliamentary appropriations, and the conditions that may be attached to them. The number of awards given per competition will be affected by the above factor as well as the number and quality of applications received.

3. Eligibility

To be eligible for this competition, applicants must be:

  • An independent researcher working at a recognized Canadian academic institution and affiliated with ICR (i.e., ICR is the primary CIHR Institute selected by the researcher when applying to CIHR open competitions).
  • Conducting research that is relevant to ICR's mission.

4. Allowable Costs

  • Tuition for specialized courses focused on acquisition of skills related to KTE research.
  • Travel costs (travel, accommodations, per diem) for travel to attend specialized courses or to train with expert researchers, knowledge users, or teams outside of the applicant's home institution/city.

Other expenses related to research skills acquisition may be eligible. Applicants unsure about the eligibility of specific expenses are encouraged to contact ICR prior to submitting their application.

Applicants must provide a clear budget justification for the amount of funding being requested, including a breakdown of estimated costs for eligible expenses.

5. Review Process and Evaluation

Applications will undergo an initial assessment by ICR staff to ensure that they are both eligible and complete. Only eligible and complete applications will proceed to the application review stage.

Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  • The strength of the applicant's rationale for engaging in the proposed training activity.
  • The potential impact of the proposed training activity/ies on the applicant's current project and future program of research in cancer.
  • The applicant's demonstrated excellence in and potential contributions to cancer research (contributions to research, leadership, and community service).
  • In the case that an applicant is proposing to enroll in a specialized course:
    • The relevance of the course to cancer research and suitability of the course instructor and course outline.
  • In the case that an applicant is proposing to train with an individual or team:
    • The expert researcher, knowledge user, or team's expertise in cancer research and fit with the applicant's proposed training activity/ies.

The evaluation committee is typically composed of the Institute's Scientific Director, ICR staff, members of the ICR Institute Advisory Board and other researchers in the field of cancer research. The review process usually takes 4-6 weeks. ICR will notify applicants of the competition results by e-mail.
