Health Research Communications Award
Raise understanding of health issues and research
The purpose of this funding opportunity is to build capacity in health journalism and communications across all sectors of health research, including biomedical, clinical, health services and policy, and population and public health. By increasing the number of Canadians engaged in communicating and disseminating the results of health research, in a variety of formats, CIHR hopes to raise the level of understanding of health related issues and research among a variety of audiences, including the general public, health professionals and policy makers. It is expected that this targeted investment will lead to more effective communication of health research in Canada.
The maximum amount awarded for a single award is $26,000 for up to two years.

CIHR Journalism Award
Investigate and cover health-related issues
Please note that the CIHR Journalism Awards program has been discontinued. CIHR is harmonizing its programming to increase the coherence and impact of its strategic investments and to attain operational efficiencies. To this end, CIHR has reviewed its slate of programming and has made the decision to discontinue a number of programs, including the Journalism Awards program. Another similar program will not be offered at this time. CIHR remains committed to knowledge translation, and continues to support KT and capacity development through other strategic funding opportunities and initiatives. For example, CIHR holds journalist workshops to connect researchers and journalists in an effort to facilitate networking, foster relationships and ultimately enhance knowledge in health research.

Elizabeth Dickson KT Fellowship Supplement
Recognizes outstanding candidates from the Fellowship Award competition
The Elizabeth Dickson KT Fellowship Supplement is offered to the highest ranked and funded candidate from each Fellowship Award competition who has applied to, and been deemed relevant for, the Knowledge Translation Priority Announcement.
In addition to the standard KT activities of presenting research findings to targeted audiences and producing lay summaries for dissemination, recipients of the KT award supplement are expected to undertake one of the following activities:
- Present at a CIHR summer institute, CIHR lunch and learn session, or KT trainee network event;
- Create a short podcast for posting on the CIHR website; or
- Carry out a clearly defined activity to be proposed to and approved by the Knowledge Translation Branch.
This award supplement consists of a $5,000 supplement to the research allowance of a regular Fellowship Award. The supplement to the research allowance is intended to be used mainly for travel to national or international conferences, workshops or meetings related to the award recipient's research.

Jonathon Lomas KT Doctoral Research Award Knowledge Translation Branch
Recognizes outstanding candidates from the Doctoral Research Award competition
The Jonathan Lomas KT Doctoral Research Award Supplement is offered to the highest ranked and funded candidate from each Doctoral Research Award competition who has applied to, and been deemed relevant for, the Knowledge Translation Priority Announcement.
In addition to the standard KT activities of presenting research findings to targeted audiences and producing lay summaries for dissemination, recipients of the KT award supplement are expected to undertake one of the following activities:

The Monique Bégin KT New Investigator Supplement is offered to the highest ranked and funded candidate from each New Investigator competition who has applied to, and been deemed relevant for, the Knowledge Translation Priority Announcement.
In addition to the standard KT activities of presenting research findings to targeted audiences and producing lay summaries for dissemination, recipients of the KT award supplement are expected to undertake one of the following activities:
- Present at a CIHR summer institute,
- CIHR lunch and learn session, or KT trainee network event;
- Create a short podcast for posting on the CIHR website; or
- Carry out a clearly defined activity to be proposed to and approved by the Knowledge Synthesis and Exchange Branch.
This award supplement consists of a $5,000 research allowance that is intended to be used mainly for travel to national or international conferences, workshops or meetings related to the award recipient's research.

CIHR Knowledge Translation Award
Acknowledges Canadian health research achievements that have had a significant impact on health, health care, and health research
These prizes recognize the exemplary knowledge translation efforts and activities of an individual, team or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to increasing the application of research findings, improving the health of individuals, health services and products, or strengthening the health-care system.
Nominations must demonstrate that the nominee has:
- Carried out KT activities that contributed considerably to moving research findings into practice or policy (including intellectual property protection, licensing activities, patents, spin-off company formation) by facilitating the synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically sound application of knowledge in Canada and/or abroad;
- Made a significant impact to the improvements in the health of individuals and/or health services/products and/or the health care system.
The amount for the Knowledge Translation Prize is $100,000 per annum, for one year and will be awarded to the top overall applicant.

CIHR-CMAJ Top Achievements in Health Research
The aim of this competition is to acknowledge Canadian health research achievements that have had a significant impact on health, health care, and health research by improving our understanding of health and human diseases, tackling health challenges, and improving our health system.
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) invite individuals or teams of health researchers, health professionals and others to submit significant achievements they may have made in any area of health research. Achievements will be selected from the following four categories: (i) biomedical; (ii) clinical; (iii) health services; and (iv) social, cultural, environmental and population health.
The Top Health Research Achievements as selected by an international review committee will be considered for publication in the CMAJ. The individuals and teams responsible for leading this work may also be highlighted on the CIHR web site and other communications materials.
Winners of previous competitions are showcased on the CMAJ and CIHR websites.
