1. Funding Opportunities
1.1 Operating Grant: Winter 2012 Priority Announcements (Cancer Research)

ICR's priority announcements (PA) on the open operating grant competition are now launched. ICR is proud to support the following PAs: (1) Cancer Research Bridge Funding (one year operating grant(s) relevant to the mandate of ICR); (2) Breast Cancer Bridge Funding (one year operating grant(s) relevant to breast cancer research priority areas); (3) Alberta Cancer Foundation Research (approximately five one year operating grants to support cancer research in Alberta) and (4) Population Health Intervention Research (two year operating grants relevant to population health intervention approaches to cancer prevention/cancer risk reduction, including research on policies and interventions for: improvement of physical activity behaviour, tobacco control, dietary habits, and/or any other modifiable validated risk factor as it relates to cancer).
1.2 ICR Publications Prizes
Application deadline: December 31, 2011
These prizes are aimed at graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents from all disciplines working in the field of cancer research who have published research articles as first authors within 12 months of the application deadline. Work described must be done in Canada and relevant to the mandate of ICR. Trainees may enter their paper into the competition for a $1,000 prize.
1.3 ICR Travel Awards
Application deadline: January 30, 2012
The ICR Travel Awards program is offered through the Institute Community Support (ICS) Program and administered by ResearchNet. The Travel Awards Program is intended for graduate students and postdoctoral trainees undergoing cancer research training. Research trainees may apply for a $1,000 travel award to cover the cost of presenting their own research at a national or international conference related to cancer.
1.4 Meetings, Planning and Dissemination (MPD) Grant
Application deadline: February 15, 2012
ICR supports planning grants and dissemination events through the MPD program. Please consult the CIHR website to apply for the MPD Grant: Dissemination Events - Winter 2012 Priority Announcement (Cancer Research)as well as the MPD Grant: Planning Grants - Winter 2011 Priority Announcement (Cancer Research). The total amount available for each funding opportunity is $25,000. The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is $25,000 per annum for up to 1 year.
1.5 CIHR Synapse Mentorship Awards 2012
Call for Nominations: January 27, 2012
These awards are given out to emphasize the importance of mentors in developing Canada's next generation of health researchers. They honour persons who have made exceptional contributions to the promotion of health research among Canadian secondary school students. The three awards, which are presented to one graduate student/postdoctoral fellow student, one accomplished researcher and one research group, recognize the efforts of those who promote health research among Canada's high school students.
1.6 Community-based Primary Healthcare (CBPHC) Innovations Teams
Stay tuned for the launch of the CBPHC Innovation Team RFA in January. ICR is a partner on this launch for teams that investigate cancer models (including breast cancer) of Community Based Primary Healthcare. Applicants will have three months from the time the RFA is posted to submit an LOI and all relevant details for the full application will also be included in the RFA. 2. CIHR Signature Initiatives
2.1 Personalized Medicine
The CIHR Institute of Cancer Research, Institute of Genetics, and Institute of Health Services and Policy Research, in partnership with several CIHR institutes, and in close consultation with provincial and federal funders, are leading a new strategic initiative in Personalized Medicine. This initiative aims to capitalize on Canadian health researchers' strengths in identifying disease-related genes and biomarkers and in translational research in order to integrate evidenced-based medicine and precision diagnostics into clinical practice. After two workshops held in 2011 in Montreal and Luxembourg, a third closed workshop on Personalized Medicine in Canada: A Multi-Stakeholder Workshop to Examine the Canadian Perspective is scheduled for 12-13 January 2012 in Ottawa in collaboration with Health Canada. This important workshop is a first of its kind in Canada and is intended to initiate a dialogue on personalized medicine issues to begin building a broad range of stakeholders. Its aim is to gain an understanding of the nature and extent of the issue, to identify potential stakeholder interests, and to explore possible synergies and cooperation for a Canadian approach to the issue.
3. The New Principal Investigators Meeting
Inaugural Canadian Cancer Research Conference Draws Top Cancer Experts to Toronto
Significant advancements in cancer research from Canadian scientists were showcased at the first Canadian Cancer Research Conference. Held in Toronto from November 27 to 30, 2011, the conference provided an opportunity for scientists to exchange ideas and be exposed to new research on topics ranging from cancer prevention and early detection, to new treatment therapies and patient care, as well as survivorship and end-of-life care. The conference also included a Community Forum and a satellite meeting for the New Principal Investigators, sponsored by the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research. Details of this meeting survey will be available soon.
4. Meetings of Interest to the Cancer Community
- AACR Annual Meeting 2012, March 31-April 4, 2012, McCormick Place, Chicago, Illinois
- UICC World Cancer Congress, August 27-30, 2012 Montreal, QC
- The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Gender and Health will host the conference Advancing Excellence in Gender, Sex and Health Research in Montréal, Canada on October 29-31, 2012. The deadline to submit an abstract is February 15, 2012. The conference will explore advances in our understandings of how sex and gender influence the health of women, men, and people of diverse gender identities over the lifespan. It will showcase excellence across the full scope of health research, from cell to society, offering a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary learning and exchange. The conference will feature dynamic presentations on new discoveries and innovative interventions, interactive poster sessions, lively discussions and valuable networking opportunities with leaders in the field. It is open to all researchers, policy-makers, health care providers, non-governmental organizations, students and others with a shared interest in gender, sex and health.
