Message from Phil Sherman, INMD Scientific Director

Phil Sherman

As we come to the end of another calendar year, it provides some time to pause and reflect. The last year for CIHR has been both interesting and eventful. The ten year International Review provided highly positive feedback about the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) and its accomplishments. It was encouraging to read comments made by the Expert Review Team with respect to INMD, in particular: "The efforts of the Institute to build a community of obesity researchers of international visibility have been successful".

The international reviewers were also extremely positive about INMD's four new strategic research priorities, as outlined in the updated INMD Strategic Plan for 2010-2014. Under the stewardship of the Institute Advisory Board chair Dr. Stephanie Atkinson (McMaster University), we have begun steps towards implementation of each of these strategic priorities. In the coming year, we look forward to announcing a variety of funding opportunities to support related targeted research opportunities.

The 2011 International Review contained 16 recommendations for CIHR. I was heartened to note that Dr. Elias Zerhouni, Chair of the International Review Panel, states that "CIHR has been, and will continue to be, a critical resource to the health of its citizens and economic well-being to the nation." To learn more about how CIHR plans to respond to the recommendations, I encourage you to read the recently posted Response and Action Plan, which was developed under the strategic direction of CIHR's Governing Council.

Wishing you and yours all the best for the holiday season and 2012.

Phil & Team INMD
