a) Funding Opportunities Promoting IA Priority Areas
Pre-announcement: Network Catalyst Grant
The Knowledge Translation Branch of CIHR plans to relaunch the Network Catalyst funding opportunity in the Fall of 2011. The objective of this funding opportunity will be to support the creation and/or further development of formal networks by encouraging national and/or international collaboration, resource sharing, capacity building and dissemination in priority research areas. Within this opportunity, the CIHR Institute of Aging will provide funding for one application determined to be relevant to the Mobility in Aging (MIA) strategic initiative. The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is $200,000 per annum for up to three years.
Chantal Caron Doctoral Research Award in Geriatric Nursing
The Chantal Caron Doctoral Research Award in Geriatric Nursing aims to stimulate research careers and to increase research capacity in this area. An increase in geriatric nursing researchers in Québec is necessary to attract excellent candidates and to enrich university-based research in the area of geriatric nursing and practice. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $150,000, enough to fund one award. The application deadline is October 15, 2011.
Catalyst Grant: Drug Safety & Effectiveness in Underrepresented Population
There are large gaps in the evidence available on the safety and effectiveness of drugs used by patient populations such as seniors, children, women and First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. Hence, more information is needed on safety and effectiveness of drugs when used by these patient populations in the "real-world", outside the restrictive environment of clinical trials intended for drug regulatory approval. It is expected that this funding opportunity will provide an opportunity to explore research topics related to post-market drug safety and effectiveness in specific populations that are generally underrepresented in clinical drug trials, including older persons.
The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $850,000. The application deadline is October 14, 2011.
Team Grant: HIV Comorbidity
The goal of these Team Grants is to improve the health of people living with HIV/AIDS in Canada by supporting the development or enhancement of expert teams of investigators and their partners undertaking collaborative, multi-disciplinary research relevant to the CIHR HIV Comorbidity Research Agenda, which focuses on the topics of:
- HIV and Aging; and
- HIV, Mental Health and Neurological Conditions.
The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $10,000,000. The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is $500,000 per annum for up to five years. The letter of intent deadline is November 1, 2011.
b) Other funding opportunities of interest
Canadian Epigenetics, Environment and Health Research Consortium (CEEHRC)
Epigenetics Fellowship
As part of their commitment to the Canadian Epigenetics, Environment and Health Research Consortium (CEEHRC), the CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) has launched a Priority Announcement in Epigenetics on the Fall 2011 Fellowship funding opportunity. CIHR-INMHA will provide funding for an application that supports research in epigenetics relevant to human health and disease. The application deadline is October 3, 2011.
CEEHRC Epigenomics Platform Grant
This Funding Opportunity is to support the development of a National Epigenomics Platform, comprised of several Epigenomic Mapping Centres (EMCs) and one Epigenomic Data Coordination Centre (EDCC). It is expected that these centres will form key nodes of the larger CEEHRC initiative. This Funding Opportunity targets existing genome sequencing centres across Canada, where there is already a critical mass of genomic research expertise and platforms for genomic mapping available for direct application to epigenomics research. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is up to $13,500,000, to support one EDCC and up to three EMCs. The registration deadline is September 29, 2011.
CEEHRC Catalyst Grant
This Funding Opportunity is to support the development of innovative new technologies and approaches that have the potential to transform how epigenetics research is performed. This may include small scale projects for the identification and validation of new epigenetic marks and related compounds (e.g. antibodies, chemical markers, etc.), the development of appropriate tools to discover and monitor epigenetic changes, and research into the mechanisms underlying the heritability of epigenetic marks. It is expected that the outcomes of this Catalyst Grant Funding Opportunity will inform other activities of the CEEHRC initiative, including potentially the Epigenomic Mapping Centres (EMCs) funded through the CEEHRC Epigenomics Platform. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $1,000,000, enough to fund approximately ten grants. The maximum amount per grant is $100,000 for up to one year. The registration deadline is September 30, 2011.
Please note: CEEHRC plans to launch a number of dedicated epigenetics funding opportunities over the next several years. Later this year, CEEHRC plans to launch an Emerging Team grant funding opportunity, to help translate epigenetic research discoveries into practical outcomes. This opportunity is expected to provide broad support for health/disease-focused teams, including both hypothesis-driven and population-based approaches in epigenetics. Updates on new funding opportunities will be provided at the time of launch.
