Message from Phil Sherman, INMD Scientific Director

CIHR Grant Writing Workshop speakers (from left): Hope Weller,
Stephanie Atkinson, Phil Sherman (moderator), and Lilliane Chenard
The first grant application to the CIHR can be a daunting task for many new investigators and postdoctoral fellows just embarking on their research careers. In June, 2011 INMD was pleased to host a grant writing workshop at the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS) annual meeting which was held in Guelph, Ontario. We were delighted that over 50 new investigators and trainees, together with a few established researchers, attended the workshop to learn about the process for submitting a CIHR grant, and obtain tips to sharpen their grant writing skills.
INMD wishes to thank Liliane Chénard, CIHR Deputy Director, Drs. Hope Weiler (McGill University) and Stephanie Atkinson (McMaster University) for their presentations at the workshop. CIHR also provides grant-writing tips in the CIHR Guidebook for New Principal Investigators: Advice on Applying for a Grant, Writing Papers, Setting up a Research Team and Managing Your Time, which is available online.
Wishing all of you a wonderful summer holiday season,
Philip M. Sherman, MD, FRCPC

National recognition award to the CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism, and Diabetes

Wim Wolfs, National Director of Research,
Kidney Foundation of Canada and
Kathryn Richardson,
National President of KFOC
At its last annual General Meeting held on June 11, 2011 in St. Andrew's, New Brunswick, the Kidney Foundation of Canada was proud to award the John B. Dossetor Mission Award – Research to the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism, and Diabetes (INMD). This award is presented to an individual or group who merits special recognition for outstanding service or other contributions to the Kidney Foundation's Research Program. Dr. Dossetor is one of the founding fathers of the Kidney Foundation of Canada and he was responsible for the high priority the Foundation places on research.
INMD received the award for its role in kidney research in Canada, but especially for its leadership role in the following partnerships with the Kidney Foundation:
- Chronic Disease New Emerging Team Initiative, 2002 – 2007
- Horizons 2015, a conference held in 2008 to develop a national kidney research agenda for Canada
- KRESCENT Program, a national kidney research training program now in its seventh year. (Burns KD , et al. Clin Invest Med. 2010;33(6):E356-67)
INMD Partners with the CHILD Foundation to host a Consultative Workshop on Establishing a Canadian Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) Network and Data Platform

Tim Murphy (Executive Director of CHILD Foundation National IBD Network),
Sally Brown (Facilitator) Mary Parsons (President and CEO of CHILD Foundation),
Aubrey Tingle (member of CHILD Foundation Scientific Research Advisory Council),
and Phil Sherman (INMD Scientific Director)
On June 27, 2011, INMD was pleased to co-host the Consultative Workshop on Establishing a Canadian Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) Network and Data Platform with The Foundation for Children with Intestinal and Liver Disorders (CHILD). This workshop took place in Toronto and was attended by over 20 physicians and researchers in the gastroenterology field from across Canada. The INMD team is looking forward to working with the CHILD Foundation to make a national network on pediatric IBD research a reality in the near future.
INMD wishes to congratulate the researchers that were successful in the March 2011 Open Operating Grant Competition for the INMD Priority Announcements
