1. IA Funding Opportunities

1. a) Funding Opportunities Promoting IA Priority Areas

CIHR-IA Fellowship Recognition Prize in Research on Aging

The IA Fellowship Recognition Prize in Research on Aging encourages and honours our brightest rising stars. It consist of a supplement to the research allowance, given in year one of the recipient's award. The recipient of the prize will be the candidate conducting research relevant to CIHR-IA's Priority topics who has received the highest rating through the February 2011 CIHR Fellowship competition, and is valued at $5,000. The application deadline is February 1, 2011.

Age+ Prize

The IA Age+ Prize recognizes excellence in research on aging carried out by emerging Canadian scholars and the resulting publications. Awards are for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents from all disciplines, conducting research in aging. The award is valued at $1,000. The application deadlines are January 15, May 1 and October 1, 2011.

Secondary Analysis of Databases

Secondary analysis grants are intended to provide an opportunity for expert analysis of existing data sets and by doing so, improve the evidence for decision-making and create new knowledge in aging, maternal and child population health and health care, neurosciences, mental health and addiction, Aboriginal health and health services and policy research. The maximum amount per grant is $50,000 per year for up to 2 years. The CIHR Institute of Aging will provide funding for applications that are determined to be relevant to the five priority topics for research on aging and health. The application deadline is March 15, 2011.


1. b) Funding Opportunities Supporting the Mobility in Aging Initiative

Knowledge Synthesis Grant: Age-supportive Built Environment (Priority Announcement)

The Knowledge Synthesis Grant for Age-supportive Built Environments funding opportunity is being offered to support knowledge translation and dissemination of research on the effects of overall or specific aspects of the built environment on the well-being of older persons. The maximum amount awarded for a single synthesis grant is $100,000 per annum for up to one year. The maximum amount awarded for a single scoping review is $50,000 per annum for up to one year. The application deadline is April 1, 2011.

Studentship in mobility, musculoskeletal health and arthritis across the lifespan

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to provide undergraduate students with opportunities to undertake research projects with established health researchers in an environment that provides strong mentorship. In addition, the initiative aims to develop human resources and expertise to facilitate the translational research objectives of CIHR (including clinical research). IA is promoting advancement of research to action to address the intrinsic and extrinsic challenges associated with mobility in aging. The maximum amount awarded for a single award is $4,950 for up to 3 months. The application deadline is January 17, 2011.


1. c) Funding Opportunities Promoting Exchange and Research to Action

Betty Havens Prize for Knowledge Translation in Aging

Through the Betty Havens Prize for Knowledge Translation in Aging, IA will recognize individual(s), team(s) or organization(s) that have advanced the translation of research in aging at a local or regional level. The maximum amount awarded for a single one-year award is $50,000 to recognize impact at the local or regional level in research on aging. The application deadline is February 15, 2011.

Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grant: Aging

The Meetings, Planning and Dissemination (MPD) - Aging funding opportunity is intended to provide support for meetings, planning and/or dissemination activities that are consistent with the mandate of the CIHR Institute of Aging and stimulate research and knowledge translation and exchange. The maximum amount awarded for a single MPD - Aging grant is $5,000 for eligible recurring events and $10,000 for eligible non-recurring events, for up to one year. Requests up to $25,000 will be accepted for eligible international partnership development activities. The application deadline is February 15, 2011.

Travel Awards in Aging

Through this trainee travel award, the IA seeks to encourage networking and exchange of ideas among emerging scholars working within its priority research areas. The award value is up to $1,000. The application deadlines are January 15, April 1, July 15 and October 15, 2011.


1. d) Other funding opportunities of interest

Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grant: Knowledge Translation Supplement

The Knowledge Translation (KT) Branch, through its KT Supplement Funding Opportunity, provides supplemental funding to enable widespread dissemination and implementation of research findings to communities beyond the traditional scientific community so as to accelerate the capture of the benefits of health research. The maximum amount awarded for a single KT supplement grant has increased from $40,000 to $100,000 for up to one year. CIHR has committed $2,000,000 to this opportunity and this increase is expected to further allow applicants to develop substantial KT strategies/interventions and activities appropriate to their research findings. The application deadline is February 15, 2011.

CIHR Knowledge Translation Prize

The CIHR Knowledge Translation Prize honours and supports the exemplary knowledge translation efforts and activities of an exceptional individual, team or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to improving the health of individuals, providing more effective health services and products and strengthening the health care system at a national or international level. To nominate an individual, team or organization for this award please refer to the following opportunity. The application deadline is February 15, 2011.
