(2010-12-16) The Scientific Council of CIHR has been made aware of false information circulating regarding funding levels in the Open Operating Grant Competitions. While we are unclear about the source of this information, we understand that if it were true it would rightly raise concerns in our community. The fact is, however, that this information is untrue.

As the accompanying figure illustrates, in the past five years the success rate for funded grants in the open grants competition has never fallen below 23 per cent. That being said, CIHR wants to move away from the use of success rates as a barometer for the health of the Open Operating Grant Program.

The number of funding applications that CIHR receives on an annual basis continues to grow. In fact, over the past six years, the number of applications has increased by 31 per cent. This is why, as was stated in a message from the office of the CIHR Vice-President, Research, in February 2008, CIHR pledges to create and maintain a stable Open Operating Grant Program. Further, CIHR committed to funding a target of between 400-450 grants per competition. We have indeed been meeting this commitment. In fact, we have exceeded our targets and, if we include one-year grants in the total number of grants approved per year, CIHR has been funding approximately 1000 grants every year.

We feel passionately that the research community is the most important partner CIHR has in building a vibrant health research enterprise in Canada. We also recognize that, as with any system, there is always room for improvement. We value your contributions and will continue to communicate directly with you on these important funding-related issues.
