Government of Canada announces Shoppers Drug Mart Arthritis Screening Program
Arthritis Screening Tool Now Available at Your Local Shoppers Drug Mart
The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, and Domenic Pilla, Shoppers Drug Mart President & CEO, have announced an innovative new arthritis screening program made possible by CIHR-funded research. Pharmacists at 1,200 Shoppers Drug Mart locations across the country will now be able to provide arthritis screening and treatment guidance to customers. Patients will also be able to consult a web-based arthritis screening app on the Shoppers Drug Mart website. This unique program is the result of a partnership between Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix, Arthritis Consumer Experts (ACE) and the Arthritis Research Centre (ARC). This patient-oriented screening tool is based on the work of ARC researchers Drs. Jolanda Cibere, Carlo Marra and John Esdaile. Their work was supported in part by CIHR.

Maura Davies receives award from Canadian College of Health Leaders
Maura Davies, a member of CIHR’s Governing Council, received the award for Distinguished Service from Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL). As President and Chief Executive Officer at the Saskatchewan Health Region, Ms. Davies is being recognized by the CCHL for devoting over 35 years of her career to healthcare as a clinical dietician, educator, and senior executive. She is a board member with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, Saskatchewan Health Quality Council, and Saskatchewan Health Sciences Network, a surveyor for Accreditation Canada and a Fellow of CCHL. As a national, member-driven, non-profit association, the CCHL is dedicated to ensuring that Canada’s health system benefits from capable, competent and effective leaders by credentialing, training, networking and mentoring them.
CIHR congratulates four recipients of the Order of Canada in fields of science and health care
CIHR commends four people who are being inducted into the Order of Canada as Officers or Members due to their work in science and health care. Created in 1967 as one of Canada’s highest civilian honours, and presented by the Governor-General, the Order of Canada recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. A special note goes to Dr. Robert Thirsk, CIHR’s Vice-President of Public, Government and Institute Affairs, who is being appointed as an Officer in field of Science for his work as a former Canadian astronaut and as someone who promotes science education. Dr. Salim Yusuf, a CIHR-funded researcher based at McMaster University, is being recognized as an Officer in the field of Health Care for contributions to establishing effective treatments for heart disorders; Dr. Diane Lamarre, a CIHR-funded researcher from Université de Montréal, is being inducted as a Member in the field of Health Care for her leadership efforts in the advancement of pharmaceutical care; and Dr. Patricia Martens, a CIHR-funded researcher based at University of Manitoba, is being recognized as a Member in the field of Health Care for her work in population health research and contributions to health policy in Manitoba.

New mechanism to prevent type 2 diabetes in obese individuals
A new Montréal study conducted by Dr. May Faraj, associate research professor at the Université de Montréal and invited scientist at the IRCM, along with her research team and medical collaborators, shows that the number of particles carrying bad cholesterol in the blood is an important factor in promoting the risk for type 2 diabetes in obese individuals. Their results are published in the May issue of the Journal of Lipid Research. This scientific breakthrough may help prevent diabetes by targeting treatments to higher-risk individuals.

Government of Canada supports initiatives to research and treat post-traumatic stress disorder
The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister for La Francophonie, marked the beginning of Mental Health Week in Canada with the announcement of new initiatives to help Canadian veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their families.
Minister Blaney launched a new PTSD Coach Canada mobile app developed by Veterans Affairs Canada, in partnership with the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Mental Health Association. PTSD Coach Canada will provide Veterans, Canadian Armed Forces personnel, and civilians with PTSD with a new way to help manage their symptoms.
The Minister also announced CIHR funding for a two-year study involving 140 clinicians that will examine how effectively they are using cognitive processing therapy to treat adults with PTSD.

Government of Canada announces new personalized health research projects across Canada
Canadians with debilitating diseases will soon benefit from new personalized approaches to treatment thanks to researchers across the country and funding from the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), announced the results of a major $150-million genomics and personalized health competition, a Genome Canada-Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) partnership. The announcement was made alongside Mike Lake, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, during a visit to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), to learn more about a project exploring the genetic basis of autism.
Joy Smith, Member of Parliament for Kildonan–St. Paul, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, announced an investment of $13.7 million to support four research projects in Ontario.
Seventeen projects in total have been approved for funding, each valued in the range of $3 million to $13 million. The projects will be spearheaded by some of Canada's top researchers and leading teams at academic institutions in Quebec (eight projects), Ontario (four projects), Alberta (one project) and British Columbia (four projects).

Government of Canada announces new Canada Research Chairs
The Canada Research Chairs program has positioned Canada as an international leader and destination of choice in research and development. In total, the Government of Canada will provide $90.6 million in support to 120 newly awarded and renewed Canada Research Chairs. The research, which will be conducted at 39 Canadian institutions, has potential benefits for Canadians and their families, businesses, practitioners and policy-makers. Of this total, 19 researchers have been recruited from abroad, including 10 Canadians returning to work in their home country—demonstrating the success of the program in attracting and supporting research excellence in Canada.

CIHR funded researcher as collaborating partner in a major brain project out of the European Union (EU)
Dr. Alan Evans, CIHR funded scientist of the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University is acting as the Canadian representative scientist to the EU's newly funded Human Brain Project (HBP). The goal of the project is to garner a new understanding of the brain and its diseases and of completely new computing and robotic technologies. The project will unite more than 80 international research institutions in the study of the complexities of the human brain. The HBP, which is set to last 10 years, has been launched today through funding by the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) initiative. The project will be coordinated at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, and headed by neuroscientist Henry Markram. Dr. Evans's contribution of ultra high-resolution 3D brain maps and brain imaging infrastructure will allow the integration of Canadian neuroscientists into an eventual global brain project.
