Message from the Prix Galien Canada Jury President – 2009 Canadian Health Research Awards

Welcome

Dr. Jacques GagnéDr. Jacques Gagné
Jury President
Prix Galien Canada

Since 1994, the jury that I preside over has had the honour of awarding 15 Prix Galien Research awards to mark the outstanding contribution of a researcher or a team of researchers in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of illnesses. During the same period, the jury awarded 12 Prix Galien Innovative Product awards to honour a new product's contribution to the quality of life of Canadians through its effectiveness, safety and innovation.

With the support of its trustee, Techni-Logique, the Prix Galien Canada strengthens ties with the health care community, the scientific community, the biopharmaceutical industry and the Canadian public.

The intention of the Prix Galien Canada is to contribute to the development of a scientific culture in Canada and to stimulate the knowledge and interest of young Canadians in the research and the science professions. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has already made moves in this direction through its unique mentorship program for young Canadian students.

This is why we, the members of the jury for the Prix Galien Canada, welcome with enthusiasm and a great deal of pride this alliance between the Prix Galien Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, an organization that makes admirable efforts to offer leadership and support to over 13,000 health researchers and interns across Canada.

I would particularly like to thank the president of CIHR, Dr. Alain Beaudet, to whom this partnership between our two organizations immediately seemed an effective way to increase Canadian interest in the country's scientific research.
