Environment Impact Pre-Screening Form Instructions

CIHR is subject to the "Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (the Act)". The Act requires that federal departments and agencies carry out environmental assessments, if needed, to ensure that the projects they fund are not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Grant and award holders must complete the "Environmental Impact Pre-Screening Form" if:

  1. they have answered "Yes" to the following question as part of their application to CIHR: Does any phase of the research described in this proposal take place outdoors, involve field work, an undertaking in relation to a physical work or have a negative impact on the environment?; or
  2. during the course of their grant or award, the nature of the research activities changes substantially and may result in adverse effects on the environment.

In the form titled "Environmental Impact Pre-Screening", the Nominated Principal Applicant outlines activities in the proposal that might have an effect on the environment. The Nominated Principal Applicant provides a brief description of the activities, the environmental elements that may be affected by these activities, the nature of the effects, and the mitigation measures, if required. On page 4 of the "Environmental Impact Pre-Screening Form", the applicant checks off all boxes that apply to the proposal and, on page five, lists all provincial or federal authorizations, permits, or licences required to undertake any activity for any phase of the proposal.

Once the "Environmental Impact Pre-Screening Form" is submitted to CIHR, CIHR staff will review the form and the proposal to ensure compliance with the Act.

If CIHR determines that a Screening under the Act is required, CIHR will contact the Nominated Principal Applicant.

The completed "Environmental Impact Pre-Screening Form" must be uploaded directly to ResearchNet or signed and mailed to the appropriate Program Delivery Coordinator at the following address:
