Training Grant: Genetic Epidemiology – Funding Decisions Notification – LOI (September 2009 Competition: 200904TGL)

(Alternate Title: Training Grant: Genetic Epidemiology Letter of Intent)

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is pleased to announce the results of the Training Grant: Genetic Epidemiology competition (Letter of Intent).

Funding Opportunity Summary

The purpose of the training grant in genetic epidemiology is to build research capacity in genetic epidemiology by training a community of scientist skilled to bridge laboratory-based research and population-based research. The overall goal is to improve our ability to prevent and manage chronic diseases through genetic epidemiologic research. This will be achieved by better understanding of underlying disease mechanisms and in some instances, by better risk-profiling tools based on genetic epidemiologic research. This initiative will support the training program of researchers in settings that foster cross-disciplinary and collaborative "hands-on" teamwork within a structured learning environment. In many cases, trainees will work and study in areas complementary to their primary background. Joint supervision by mentors from different disciplines is encouraged. The focus of the program is to train researchers to have the analytical expertise to design and conduct studies that will allow them to i) identify and characterize genetic determinants for chronic diseases, ii) measure the public health impact of knowing these genetic determinants; iii) develop the analytic tools necessary to achieve these goals and iv) integrate the use of genetic determinants into studies of the molecular basis of chronic diseases.

Funding Competition Summary

A total of 5 Letters of Intent were received of which 5 were invited to submit a full application.
