June 20-21, 2007
University of Waterloo

Note: Registration for the Nanomedicine meeting must be made through the CFBS website. Please note that there will be a registration fee for the Nanomedicine meeting this year, in addition to the Nanoforum fee. Please see the CFBS website for details.

As with previous Nanomedicine meetings, this event seeks to stimulate meaningful interactions between interested participants on the health impacts of nanotechnology. The chosen theme of this year's meeting is on the health application of nanoparticles and other nanomaterials.

The 5th annual Nanomedicine meeting will be held in conjunction with the annual Nanoforum meeting (June 18-20, University of Waterloo). This year we are also working in partnership with the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies (CFBS), and this Nanomedicine meeting will serve as one of two CFBS Northern Lights Summer Conferences for 2007.

The chosen theme of this year's Nanomedicine meeting is: Nanostructures and their Biomedical Applications. Sessions will feature plenary lectures by leading international experts in the field, followed by leading Canadian researchers and students, and government representatives. Topics include:

  1. Targeted nano-delivery systems (both for drugs and gene therapy)
Plenary Lecture: David Needham, Duke University
Anne Petitjean, Queens University, Kingston, ON
Shirley X.Y. Wu, University of  Toronto, Toronto, ON
Shawn Wettig, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON
Kevin Letchford, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC
Special outreach presentation: Dr Delara Karkan, Health Canada

  2. Diagnostic and imaging applications of nanotechnology
Plenary Lecture: Shuming Nie, Emory University School of Medicine
Anatoli Ianoul, Carleton University, Ottawa, ON
Gonzalo Cosa, McGill University, Montreal, QC
James Shaw, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON
Jody Swift, McGill University, Montreal, QC
Special outreach presentation: Dr Nicole Buckley, Canadian Space Agency

  3. Nanotoxicology and potential health effects
Plenary Lecture: Günter Oberdörster, University of Rochester
Dusica Maysinger, McGill University, Montreal, QC
Baljit Singh, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK
Tanya Hauck, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON
Shane Journeay, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK
Special outreach presentation: European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7)

A special luncheon on Risk Assessment of Nanostructures will be sponsored by ERA-CAN. This event will seek to increase awareness of European and Canadian research and funding opportunities in this area.

Full session details, including the program with invited speakers, will be available shortly.
Student participation and poster presentations are strongly encouraged. Travel bursaries of up to $500 will be offered to all attending students and research trainees from outside the local area (receipts required).

Partial reimbursement of the Nanomedicine registration fee will be provided for attendees of both the Nanoforum and Nanomedicine meetings. Please check back for updates.
