CIHR Team Grants and CIHR Team Grants Priority Announcement: Clinical Research Networks

Fall 2007 Competition Decisions

CIHR is pleased to announce that 7 of the 28 applications submitted to the November 2007 Team Grant competition have been approved for funding and that 1 of the 7 applications will be funded in partnership with the Clinical Research Initiative through the CIHR Team Grant Priority Announcement: Clinical Research Networks (see full list below).

The Clinical Research Initiative is CIHR's response to a clear need and opportunity to strengthen Canadian clinical research and to enhance its uptake into practice and policy. Since 2001, CIHR has led a process of national consultation, needs identification, partnership building and action development which has formulated plans for training and sustaining the next generation of clinician researchers and for creating nationally networked clinical research centers. CIHR has designated the Clinical Research Initiative as one of its top strategic priorities.

Lists of successful applications:

Each list provides the name of the nominated principal investigator and co-applicant(s), title, average annual operating budget approved, term of the grant, peer review committee to which it was assigned and whether any condition has been placed on approval of the grant ("Pending"). The total number of applications received, the total number of applications funded and the total dollar investment include any grants that require Stem Cell Oversight Committee review; however, these applications will only be posted on the list of successful applications following further consideration by Governing Council. If an application falls into this category, then the Nominated Principal Investigator is notified in the Letter of Decision.

Designation as "pending" signifies that one or more of the following situations exists:

  1. degree of overlap of the proposal with existing or pending funding from another source has not been determined; or
  2. status of faculty appointment is not known; or
  3. there is some other issue that has to be resolved before funding can be approved.

By signing applications, applicants, administrators and partners (where applicable) agree that any research carried out with funds from CIHR will respect all of CIHR's requirements for the ethical conduct of research as expressed in policy documents.

In general, the policy statements place primary responsibility on the researchers, and require the institutions in which the research is to be conducted to have in place the monitoring and review committees defined in the guidelines. CIHR reserves the right to deny or withdraw funding if the researcher or the institution does not comply with the guidelines.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) wishes to take this opportunity to register its appreciation for the diligence and dedication of thousands of scientists who work as volunteers within the peer review system to ensure maintenance of its high standards for scientific excellence and fairness. CIHR also wishes to convey its congratulations to those applicants who have been awarded funding in these competitions, and to express its respect for the many applicants who, while not successful this time, represent critical components of the health research community in Canada.
