Biography

Solomon Benatar is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Cape Town, Founding Director of the UCT Bioethics Center and Program Director of the International Research Ethics Network for Southern Africa, a US NIH Fogarty International Center funded capacity building program. He has been an annual Visiting Professor in Medicine and Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto since 2000. His academic interests have included respiratory diseases, health services, academic freedom, human rights, medical ethics, international research ethics, HIV/AIDS and global health on which he has published widely. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa, an elected foreign member of the US National Academy of Sciences` Institute of Medicine and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2005 he was elected as a Fellow of Imperial College London.
